Looking to upgrade your TV, or thinking of installing a home cinema experience? Baffled by the recent choices – 4K, 4K Lite, UHD, SUHD? Our quick overview will give you some insight into this confusing world of acronyms!
HDTV – Nearly all TVs are now full High Definition Televisions (HDTV). These screens increase the once common resolution of 420p, to 1080p. What does that mean? Well, in vague terms, the number relates to how many lines are on the screen – the more lines, the sharper (and better) the image.
4K – 4K is slowly become the new standard in television. Sky has begun streaming live football in full 4K, whilst Netflix and others are now expanding programs fully into 4K. So, why the move? The reason is simple: 4K tv’s have a resolution around 4 times that of regular HD. That means the image is around 4 times sharper. The difference between a 4K screen and an HDTV is immediately noticeable. It is an incredible picture quality – and a level of detail that is guaranteed to leave you speechless.
4K Lite – 4K Lite are TV’s which are higher definition than HD but are not complete 4K resolutions.
UHD – You may have heard the term UHD or 4K separately – but UHD or Ultra High-Definition, is simply another name for 4K.
8K – These TVs are even more cutting edge than 4K. It’ll be a long time until programs and sports are streamed in full 8K (we have yet to see 4K fully adopted!), but for those that want to be well ahead of the curve, this is an option which will mean you won’t have to upgrade your home cinema room for quite a few years. All the while you guarantee yourself fantastic quality television.
SUHD – So, finally, what is SUHD? SUHD are Samsung’s own version of 4K. Basically, they’re a luxury line of 4K TVs. They’re 4K, but the absolute top of their league.
